Jarah Mariano
For the last named, Jarah Mariano was the lead subject for photographer Bruce Webber, which is a little ironic. Some years ago Abercrombie & Fitch was in the news for selling T-shirts with text and images offensive to the Asian-American community:
Abercrombie & Fitch who started with one small New York City outdoors store and factory in 1892, said in their defense, "We poke fun at everybody, from women to flight attendants to baggage handlers, to football coaches, to Irish Americans to snow skiers. There's really no group we haven't teased." Again in 2003 the store was in the news for sexist slogans on T-shirts for girls; one such had the words "Who needs a brain when you have these?" splashed across the chest!
No such controversy has come the way of Jarah Mariano's modeling photos.

Alexis Bledel
Who is Alexis Bledel? Alexis Bledel is beautiful enough to be a model or a movie star, and has been doing both for 12 years. But she is so private, hardly does interviews, and is rarely seen at parties or events, that most people who haven't seen her work, wonder just who is Alexis Bledel??
Alexis Bledel has been so guarded about her private life that even her die-hard fans don't know that she has a mostly Latino background! She surprised her co-star and friend America Ferrera by speaking in fluent Spanish during an interview with a Spanish magazine. The two actresses came together in 2005 for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants; the sequel to this movie will be coming out in August this year. Left to right are Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, Amber Tamblyn, and America Ferrera:
Not only is Alexis Bledel fluent in Spanish, this was in fact her first language, and she only picked up English while at school! Ferrera herself, identified as a Latino actress, is comparatively weak in Spanish. Alexis Bledel on the other hand is identified as "white" because of her pale skin and clear blue eyes.
Which makes one wonder whether race/ethnicity actually matters as much as physical appearance in America. Jessica Alba has always been classed as a Latina despite her Danish and French ancestry. In this respect Alexis Bledel is like Cameron Diaz, who has mostly Hispanic ancestry, but is regarded as white because of her light skin, light eyes, and blond hair.
But at least Cameron Diaz has a Hispanic surname; Alexis Bledel's father Martin Bledel is from Argentina. Bledel is a German/Dutch surname and many German families settled down in South American countries from as far back as the 19th century. Even more interesting, Alexis Bledel's mother Nanette Blake is a Mexican national, but with French and German ancestry!
Curiously it was to overcome her shyness that her mother encouraged eight-year old Alexis Bledel to join theater in her native Houston. She went on to attend St. Agnes Academy in Houston and later majored in Film at the New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. But much before that Alexis Bledel had entered the world of modeling, through the apparently common tale of being sighted at a mall by a modeling scout!
Alexis attended the Page Parkes Center of modeling and acting and traveled around the world for fashion assignments. With her height of 5'7" and slim body, Alexis Bledel was a natural model; but even she was asked at one modeling call to lose 2 inches off her hips!
In the year 2000 Alexis Bledel got her first acting job as the character of Rory in the popular Gilmore Girls TV show. So at age 19 she played the part of a 16-year old daughter of a 32-year old mother (Lauren Graham)....the popular show ran for seven years (ending May 15 2007) and covered issues like teen pregnancy, single parenting, and mother-daughter relationships. Curiously Alexis Bledel became a supporter of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy in 2005, "It really attracted me because it gives people the information that they need to make decisions in life. Plus, our show is based on a teen pregnancy. There is a connection with our audience. We get lots of letters from teen moms."
Gilmore Girls made Alexis Bledel a household name among female fans, but it also got the shy actress her first relationship. Alexis dated co-star Milo Ventimiglia for nearly four years, ending that relationship in 2006. And Milo's surname is from a town of the same name in Italy.
With the popularity and success of Gilmore Girls, Alexis Bledel got some movie roles. The very first was Tuck Everlasting where she got the lead role opposite such talents as Sissy Spacek, William Hurt and Ben Kingsley. In 2004 she appeared in the eight-minute film DysEnchanted and later that year in Bride and Prejudice, a modern take on the classic Pride and Prejudice, which interestingly also starred a famous Indian actor Aishwarya Rai and was released in India under a different name.
Alexis Bledel continued with her strange movie choices by appearing in the action flick Sin City in the role of a prostitute! In 2006 Alexis starred in the small budget I'm Reed Fish and turned producer with the comedy Life is Short. Apart from The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants 2, Alexis Bledel will be seen in The Post-Grad Survival Guide, where she stars with Carol Burnett and Michael Keaton. Alexis has the role of a girl named Ryden Malby, who graduates from college and moves back home with her eccentric family.
Alexis Bledel works with First Book, a nonprofit organization running children's literacy program, which gives books to poor families. She is also interested in politics but will not reveal her political views just yet! Alexis hates coffee, loves Wendy's 99 cent chicken nuggets, hates shellfish, enjoys hiking, is a bad driver, and loves traveling to Europe.
Oh and her first name is Kimberley, which she is called by family and friends. Why she did not keep her first name in her professional life is another one of the Alexis Bledel mysteries, which may (or may not) be revealed in the course of some interview in the future! Alexis Bledel was ranked by the men's magazine Maxim as 87 in their Hot 100 of 2005, but declined to pose on their cover. There are almost no pictures of Alexis Bledel even in her bikini!
Of her own days as a teenager Alexis Bledel recalls, "My mom has always been a friend to me, but it's always awkward to talk about sex, especially if you're a teenager." And on the question of her virginity the following statement makes things clear, "I was okay with waiting until I got to college to do things my parents probably didn't want me to do."

Kiira Korpi figure skater

The cute Kiira Korpi is a figure skater from Finland.
Kiira Korpi made her competitive skating debut as a 14-year old in the 2002 Finnish Championships. She finished 13th in the senior levels of the 2005 European Championships at Torino, Italy. Kiira came first in 8th Merano Cup 2005 Merano and in Finlandia Trophy 2006. The Finnish skating federation nominated Kiira to join the Finnish team at the 2006 Winter Olympics, where she finished in 16th place.
But it was at the European Championships later that year that Kiira Korpi became a popular name in her native country when she got Finland the bronze medal...only the second female skater to get a medal in that championship ever. Apart from her skating skills, Kiira Korpi is becoming well-known globally because of her physical beauty and good looks. In the last couple of years she has acquired an international fan following and has been featured on magazine covers.
Kiira Korpi with her Finnish teammates Jenni Vahamaa and Laura Lepisto
Kiira Korpi was born on September 26 1988 in Tampere Finland. Close to her home is a skating rink, but Tampere like most of Finland is the base for another more popular skating sport, ice hockey! In fact Kiira's father Rauno Korpi played in the local Tappara Tampere ice hockey club, which won the national hockey championship of Finland. He later coached the women's hockey team of Finland to a bronze medal at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan.
But neither Kiira nor her older sister Petra were ever drawn to take up ice hockey, even though they went to see all the games. Petra says, "I and Kiira have never tried ice hockey, we haven’t even ever put hockey skates on." Due to Rauno's job as coach, his family moved around Europe with the team, spending time in Austria when Kiira was 5.
Kiira and her sister Petra featured in Finland's Apu Magazine
Kiira is very close to her sister Petra Korpi. They are almost the same age, Petra being older by only two years, and the same size. The sisters have had plenty of fights over clothes! Petra took up figure skating and participated in competitions, but at the age of fifteen her hamstring muscle ruptured while Petra was skating, and never healed completely. That ended her skating career about the same time as Kiira Korpi was starting to compete.
Petra focused on her high school and then studied marketing in a business school at Vaasa. Says Petra, "I have handled Kiira’s fanmail on the time I have from my studies, and we have even talked about starting a business togheter, but that’s not current until Kiira’s skating career is over and I have graduated." Petra is currently (April 2008) an exchange student in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kiira lets out that she and her sister have the same taste in men; the Finn girls don't care if their guys are blond or dark or tall, they just have to be athletic and positive.
Apart from figure skating Kiira enjoys snowboarding, roller-skating, and other regular girl stuff like music and meeting friends. Her favorite movies of all time? Galdiator, Lord of the Rings, and Ice Age (no surprise here!). Kiira Korpi's favorite actors are Johnny Depp and British girl Keira Knightley, who is almost her namesake. The name Kiira is the Finnish form of Kyra, which is the feminine version of the original Persian name Cyrus, also found in the Old Testament.![]()
Kiira would like to vacation somewhere warm like Hawaii and her motto in life is, "Believe in your dreams and they tend to come true." Her popularity in Finland led to Kiira being nominated as the The Most Positive Finn personality in 2006. The next year she was awarded Inhabitant of The Year by the people of Tampere, receiving the award at her Sammon Urheilulukio upper secondary school.
2008 has been a mixed year for Kiira Korpi....she finished in 5th place at the European Championships. Kiira graduated from school in March but failed at another skating event.

At the World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg Sweden this March, Kiira Korpi ended up in 9th place overall behind her teammate Laura Lepistö. After the short event, where she performed well and was in fourth place, Kiira Korpi dressed in pink, had some missed triple jumps during her performance in the free skate event. More embarrassingly she fell while attempting a spiral sequence.
Kiira Korpi was seen next in Malaysia, where she spent time with her sister and also visited the Sepang race track where the Finns Kimi Räikkönen (for Ferrari) and Heikki Kovalainen (for Mclaren) were competing.

Kiira Korpi has some time off before her next major competition, the Invitational Competition in Japan on April 29. Like her sister Petra, Kiira plans to study further, and will apply at the Tampere School of Economics. Good thing that she's completing her education, since it's her beautiful looks that set Kiira Korpi apart from her teammates. She could have gone down the route of just doing advertisements and then going into movies.
